Video Editing

With the proliferation of cheap digital video cameras anyone with access to one of these and a computer can get into the ‘movie business’.

As far as free video editing software goes the choices are limited and for Windows XP users I would recommend sticking with the surprisingly good Windows Movie Maker that comes inbuilt in Windows XP.  Movie Maker is quite capable and with a well laid out and intuitive interface is very easy to use.

However, for more advanced video editing there are still other free options.

Zs4 is the new incarnation of what was known as Zwei-Stein.

For those who are running an older version of windows or want something a little more powerful then try this.  I haven't tried Zs4 but Zwei-Stein  strange looking program with a very unconventional interface which means you’re really going to have to sit down and figure this one out before you get productive.

Once you've figured it out (there are tutorials on the site) you will be able to take advantage of some quite advanced features that this free video editing program offers.

Avid Free DV is something a little more conventional from industry leaders whose name is synonymous with high-end video editing solutions.  If you’d like to get a taste of their software then you can download Avid Free DV from their website free of charge.  In order to download the software you do have to fill in a registration form with you name and contact details in order to get the unlock key for the program.

Avid Free DV is basically a streamlined version of Avid's professional video editing software.  The limited features are enough for home movie editing: basic video and audio editing capabilities, up to two streams of real-time effects (16 effects to choose from) and a titling tool.  There are also 14 video tutorials on the website to help you get started.

Avid offers this software for free in order for prospective customers to get used to their interface and hopes to entice you to upgrade to their professional software.
