On Screen Reminders

If you’re anything like me you take notes and make notes and leave bits of paper lying around all over the place.  Before they invented the sticky Post-it® notes it was just the flat surfaces that I littered but with the sticky notes nowhere was safe.   When I started spending a lot of time working in front of the computer it got to the point where a good part of my screen was obscured by notes stuck around the edge… then I discovered the software version.

One advantages of these is that they don’t take over your screen because they don’t have to stay always on top like the real ones (although you can have them set to stay ‘always on top’).  You can also set them to act as alarms and they are much more obvious than an entry in a calendar or diary program because you’ll see the notes, at the very least, every time you glimpse your desktop.

Of course, there is various software you can buy to get these notes but here are two free choices for your next ‘note to self’ including a freebie (although a well hidden one) from 3M themselves who pioneered the actual paper notes.

Stickies was written by a programmer who shared the same problem I had with notes all over his monitor.  Unlike me, he was clever enough to code a solution and generous enough to offer it for free.

This is a small and simple program neatly written so it will not mess with your system files, or write to the registry and to it stores all information in a single text-based ini file.

Features include:

  • Once on screen, stickies will remain where placed until closed, even through reboots
  • Customisable appearance
  • Stickies can be transferred from one machine to another either over a TCP/IP network connection, or by using an SMTP mail server or MAPI client
  • Stickies can be hidden for a certain period, until a specified date and time, or to wake every day, week or month, to act as reminders.
  • Alarm function
  • Stickies can be transferred to and from your Palm or PPC PDA.
  • International language support

Stickies runs on Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP.

Post-it® Software Notes Lite is from the company that brought us the paper Post-it® notes.  It’s a free lite version of their software version.  Although this software has fewer features than Stickies I actually prefer it because it’s a little simpler and the notes are smaller and less obtrusive.  You can still post a basic note as well as add pictures and hyperlinks and set alarms.

You’re probably going to have to look hard for this one on their site – it’s hidden away.  If you can't find it by searching the site just use the direct link below to download it.

Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 or newer installed is required to run this software.
